Exploring Certifications: Fair Trade

October is Fair Trade Month and a reminder that every purchase we make as a consumer, from bananas to flowers to coffee, has the potential to make a positive impact on the life of a farmer. We know you might recognize the certification logo from our coffee bags, but how much do you know about Fair Trade?

Fair Trade USA is a nonprofit organization with a mission to “enable sustainable development and community empowerment by cultivating a more equitable global trade model that benefits farmers, workers, consumers, industry and the earth.” They accomplish these goals by reviewing business transactions between US companies and their international suppliers. In order for a product to become certified the company and supplier must meet international Fair Trade standards. The benefits of producing a Fair Trade Certified™ commodity for farmers include: a guaranteed minimum price (or market price, whichever is higher) for their product, safe working conditions (child labor is strictly prohibited on Fair Trade farms), and the autonomy to choose how Fair Trade premium funds will be spent to improve their communities.

Fair Trade Certified™ products originating in more than 45 countries are being sold in the U.S. Each purchase helps make a significant impact, benefiting 1.6 milling farmers and workers all over the globe. Out of 1,250 responsible businesses that proudly partner with Fair Trade, we are proud to be one of the coffee partners and be part of several impactful projects funded by the purchase of Fair Trade coffees.

For consumers, Fair Trade makes it easy to identify products that have a direct impact on farmers. At ecoGrounds we believe in offering consciously great coffees by purchasing from sustainable sources, like Fair Trade Certified™ farms. We know any premiums we pay will go right back to reinvesting in the farmer’s livelihood and community, ensuring a long term direct relationship.
